Last Whites of the East End

Cockneys are becoming a dying breed in one east London borough, according to a new BBC documentary.
The film, the Last Whites of the East End, claims that white British people are leaving the borough in such numbers that 73 per cent of the local population is now made up of black and minority ethnic people.
The borough, in the shadow of the Olympic Park was historically almost all white working class, home mostly to dockworkers who moved in during the 1800s.
However, according to the documentary, more than half of the white population has left Newham in the past 15 years alone, resettling in places like Essex.
While in the same period, seventy thousand immigrants have moved into the borough, meaning it now has the lowest percentage of white British residents of anywhere in London.
Newham is now the most multicultural place in the UK, with 147 languages spoken across the borough.
One man says in the documentary: “It’s hard to find somebody who speaks English in Newham.
“We’ve always been a country where immigration plays a part, but not on the scale you find now.
“You go from Aldgate to Barking and there is very few English people left.”
Children at one local primary school, Drew Primary in Docklands, speak 43 different languages, with a new non-English speaking pupil arriving each week.

Australian head teacher Emma Peltier said she believes the school’s multiculturalism to be a positive thing.
She said: “We no longer live in a mono-cultural society, we have 43 languages spoken and at least once a week we have a child arrive who has no English.
“Really quickly children pick up the language.
“Schools and children can be a fantastic way of people assimilating into society because children don’t see colour and children don’t see religion.”
Last Whites of the East End airs on BBC1 on Tuesday, May 24, at 10.45pm.

A good reason for the exodus of the "East End"is for the same reasons my parents did.
Living through the Blitz as a little kid
being more terrified than most of us will ever know and spending half their childhood growing up on a bombed out manor.
Fucking odd that my parents fucked off to Romford for us to have a better life.

Accents are really weird though bru. One of my daughters has a southern accent like her dad and me despite being up here since just before her 2nd Birthday, she is now 12. Her 10 year old sister has a really strong accent, despite being exposed to it for less time.

When I was growing up most of what is now Newham was not considered the east end. Coming from the Essex direction the east end did not begin until Canning Town , Poplar or Bow.

Just watched it.
My Uncle done a family tree and up until my Dad, we had 7 generations going back - all of them either Whitechapel or Stepney. None of this faux-cockney East of the Lea bullshit. I'm talking proper EAST END!
Each generation had a Cornelius. Fuck knows why. That got binned off by great grandparents thank the Lord.
Anyway we fucked off 77. Dad hated the Turks that turned up (unofficial reason) he's Dagenham born which to his Dad probably made him a fucking farmer.

I lived in Newham for 30 years from the 1970's up to the end of the millennium and I can remember hearing people say these same things throughout all my time there. Maybe what is happening today is exactly what the real East End always does that is change, so it's character today simply reflect it's current population like it always has.
The irony is that most that have moved out in my lifetime going back to the 70's and probably before would have said it was to escape the East End and give their kids a better life (usually prompted because there were too many brown faces), so it is strange to hear many waxing lyrically about the East End they were quick to abandon now.
For me Newham is in many ways a much better place now than when I lived there, yes it is of course it is massively different in some places but that reflects it's current inhabitants just like I assume the areas that used to be nice which were overrun with old EastEnders have too.
Of course there are numerous other issues mainly political ones but there is a lot of rose tinted views being spouted otherwise it simply leaves you questioning if it was so good why have so many voluntarily left there over the last 50 years or so?
Ultimately if you give up anything for others to use, you shouldn't expect it to be used exactly the same way you did so why think a place you used to live would be any different?
